Legends of an Inland Sea: Maple Island
Guided Interpretive Canoe Tour: 4 hours
Service Description
Lake Superior Coastal Paddle The waters of Lake Superior hold stories—some of adventure, some of survival, and some of tragedy. As you glide along its rugged shoreline, your guide will teach you the essentials of paddling while sharing the region’s rich history, culture, and ecology. If you're an experienced paddler, we’ll launch right away and let the rhythm of the waves set the pace for your journey. If conditions allow, your route will take you to Maple Island, a quiet place with a haunting past. In the early 1800s, a group of fur traders transporting prisoners to Montreal found themselves caught in a sudden storm. Their canoe was no match for the power of Lake Superior, and their journey came to a tragic end on the island’s rocky shores. The full story, like the island itself, waits to be discovered. Partway through the tour, pause for a shoreside snack before continuing your paddle. Afterward, enjoy time on the water at your own pace or continue exploring with your guide. “We can’t always ask for good weather, but we can always ask for good judgment.” If conditions permit, tours will launch from Forest The Canoe’s basecamp in Goulais River. Alternate locations, including Goulais Bay or other inland lakes and rivers in the Goulais River/Sault Ste. Marie area, are available upon request. Additional costs may apply for alternate locations. Pricing: $200 + tax for 2 people $80 for each additional person Includes: ✔ Shoreside Snack ✔ Interpretive Guide ✔ Paddling Gear ✔ Canoe Rental Deposit: $25 non-refundable deposit required. Waiver to be signed prior to departure.
